REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, LASHKAR GAH -- At least two persons were killed and four others wounded Sunday evening when gunmen attacked a police station in Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand province in southern Afghanistan, police said.

"Three suicide bombers attacked a police station in Nangarhar road of the city at around 7:00 p.m. local time. One bomber detonated a suicide jacket at the front gate of the building, killing himself and a policeman. Two attackers entered the building following the blast and exchanged fire with security forces," a police officer told Xinhua anonymously.

The security forces launched a counter attack to clear the area as the gunfight is going on there, the police officer said.

"Three police personnel and one civilian were wounded and had been shifted to a nearby hospital," he added.

Security forces have cordoned off the area for precautionary measures.

General Nabi Jan Mullahkhil, the provincial police chief, told Xinhua that an investigation was launched into the incident and details will be revealed later.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

The Taliban militant group has intensified attacks over the past couple of months as the Afghan security forces assumed the full security responsibility from NATO-led troops since Jan. 1 this year.
