REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Governor of East Kalimantan Awang Faroek Ishak has noted that East Kalimantan province is a proper location for nuclear power plant development in Indonesia.
"East Kalimantan is appropriate for building a nuclear power plant as the area hardly has earthquake disturbances," Governor Awang Faroek Ishak said here Monday (13/4).
Since there are no volcanic eruptions in Kalimantan, the land can be considered stable and not vulnerable to tsunamis, he explained.
The governor plans to meet President Joko Widodo and secure his permission to build a nuclear power plant in East Kalimantan province.
The governor observed that the National Nuclear Power Agency, which supports the plan, conducted a pre-feasibility study from 2007 to 2009 for developing a nuclear power plant in East Kalimantan province.
Based on the study, two areas in East Kalimantan, Taliyasan in Berau district and Sangatta in East Kutai district, are considered the most potential and secure for the development of a nuclear power plant.
Data from the Ministry of Natural Resource and Minerals shows that the 52.80 percent electricity is generated from coal-based power plants, 24 percent from natural gas-based plants, and 11.45 percent from oil-based power plants.
The East Kalimantan administration plans to build a nuclear power plant to meet the electricity needs of several areas of the province.
The East Kalimantan administration will team up with Batan to conduct a feasibility study to lure investors and get a budget allocation from the government for constructing the power plant.
