REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, LEBAK -- The number of people using illegal drugs in Indonesia currently stands at around four million, Chief of the Banten Provincial Police Brig. Gen. Boy Rafli Amar said.

"Nearly 40 of the four million people die every day," Amar revealed at a ceremony to launch an anti-drug movement in Lebak district on Saturday.

He added that the numerous black markets where illicit drugs were sold must be exposed.

Furthermore, Amar emphasized on the active role the public could play in preventing the black markets for illicit drugs.

Drugs could destroy younger generations and their future, he remarked.

In this regard, he called on all elements of the community, including students, to wage a war against drugs.

"If residents find the contraband around their houses, they should immediately report it to the police," he pointed out.

According to the National Narcotics Board (BNN), 18,788 cases of illicit drugs were disclosed in 2014, with 25,150 people being named as suspects; nearly 56.4 million tons of drugs were seized last year.

"We hope the public provides police officers with information that could help to expose drug trafficking networks," the police chief noted.

Moreover, the chief of the edict (fatwa) division of the Lebak district chapter of the Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI), KH Baijuri, stated that drug trafficking in Indonesia was categorized as a disaster because it affected both urban and rural areas.
