REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PAMEKASAN -- The Pamekasan district police on Madura Island ordered its personnel to submit to a urine drug test on Thursday to corroborate whether they engaged in illegal drug use while on the job.
"The urine test is one of our efforts to establish whether or not police personnel have consumed drugs," spokesman of the district police Adj. Comsr. Mariyatun noted.
He explained that the urine test, which aims to detect drug use among police personnel, was also part of the district police's serious efforts to eradicate drug trafficking.
"The efforts to combat drug trafficking will be successful if the police officers are free from the influence of drugs," he emphasized.
If law enforcers consumed drugs, the efforts to eradicate drug trafficking would not yield maximum success, he pointed out.
Chief of the Pamekasan District Police Adj. Snr. Comsr. Sugeng Muntaha noted that the urine test was aimed to not only maximize the efforts to eradicate drug trafficking but also to reinforce the common commitment shared by the members of the regional heads' forum in the island to combat drug trafficking.
"So, all employees of government agencies at the district, sub-district, and village levels will be required to take a urine test for drugs," he affirmed.
Earlier, a police officer tested positive for the use of crystal meth after taking a urine test. The police officer had undergone a legal process, he said.
The police officer also received an internal sanction for violating the code of ethics, he added.
