REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, DHAKA -- Bangladesh's largest opposition party Saturday said it will stage demonstrations across the country Sunday in protest against the disappearance of the party's Joint Secretary General Salahuddin Ahmed.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Spokesman Barkat Ullah Bulu announced the protest program in a statement on Saturday night.

The countrywide demonstration also aimed at protesting what Bulu, also a BNP joint secretary general who replaced Ahmed, said "the wholesale arrests and killings of opposition leaders and activists".

He said the countrywide demonstrations will be held alongside the ongoing non-stop blockade, demanding safe return of all missing party leaders including Ahmed.

Ahmed's family alleged that some plainclothes men showed identity cards of the Detective Branch (DB) of Bangladesh Police and picked up him from a house in Dhaka March 10 night.

But police officially denied of arresting Ahmed who has recently been made BNP spokesman following arrest of another top party leader.

Demanding necessary steps for getting back Ahmed, BNP had enforced several round of strikes since his disappearance amid its ongoing blockade campaign.

Ex-Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's 20-party opposition alliance has been observing the nonstop blockade across the country since Jan. 5, demanding fresh elections under a non-party caretaker government system.
