REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Women play a significant role in the conservation of water, noted Minister for Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Yohana Yembesi.

"The role of women is significant in conserving water because a mother's habit is usually followed by other members of the family," Yembesi stated after attending a "Women For Mangrove Carnival" here on Sunday.

Environmental issues are not just national but also international issues, she pointed out.

Women must be involved as they play an active role in addressing environmental problems, according to the minister.

Water problems such as water pollution and sea water intrusion are not only faced by Indonesia but also by other countries in the world, she noted.

"Women must be made aware of the environmental issues including water-related problems," she remarked.

Some five thousand members belonging to women's organizations joined the carnival, during which they planted mangrove trees along the coastal areas in Bekasi and Jakarta.

Chairwoman of Kowani women's organization Giwo Rubianto Wiyogo affirmed that women are the main drivers of the environmental movement.

"Regarding water, we have two main concerns such as water conservation and cleanliness," Wiyogo emphasized.

Women must become role models for water conservation. Kowani would carry out an advocacy program for women in order to tackle water issues.
