REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BOGOR -- The members of the Indonesia Blue Swimming Crab Processors Association (APRI) participated in the International Boston Seafood Show in Boston, the United States, on March 15-17, 2015.

During the show, APRI Executive Director Hawis Madduppa highlighted the progress made in the Fisheries Improvement Project (FIP) in Indonesia.

Hawis, who just arrived from Boston, stated here on Sunday that the seafood show held in Boston, known as "Seafood Expo North America/Seafood Processing North America," was the largest seafood trade event.

According to Hawis, the event attracts over 20 thousand buyers and suppliers of fresh, frozen, packaged, and value-added seafood products, equipment, and services.

He noted that the APRI and all its members are committed to campaign for sustainable crab harvesting to the supply chain for effective impact by increasing crab supply through stock enhancement, collaboration with universities to support scientific research and the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries to develop the National Fishery Management Plan and to collaborate closely with fishermen communities to establish community-based fishery management.

He noted that all project activities were managed in the FIP to create a sustainable impact on the supply chain and blue swimming crab (BSC) resources and also to the ecosystem where the BSC are harvested.

BSC fishing in Indonesia is mostly carried out by small-scale fishermen using boats weighing less than 10 gross tonnage (GT), with or without motors, and in some cases, the fishermen did not use boats.

Hawis remarked that the progress of FIP in Indonesia included the approval of a rule by the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries in January 2015 on crab catching and the completion of a research conducted by the Research Center for Fisheries Management and Conservation of Fish Resources (P4KSI -KKP) in the Java Sea, in late December 2014.
