REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Efforts to pave the way towards food and energy self-reliance require qualified human resources, according to Culture, Elementary and Secondary Education Minister Anies Baswedan.

"Efforts to improve the capacity and quality of human resources to support food and energy self-reliance can be made through the improvement of education quality in various regions across the country," Anies said here on Saturday.

He made the statement during a discussion on "Planting the Seeds of Self-reliance" which was also attended by Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman Said and Medco Group leader Arifin Panigoro.

On the occasion, Anies noted that the system of education in Indonesia was an important part in the efforts to solve various national and global problems, including those related to food and energy.

In the meantime, Arifin Panigoro said serious attention should be given to food and energy problems that will be big challenge for Indonesia in the future.

"It is estimated that rice consumption in 2025 will reach 39.2 million tons, with the number of population at the time will be around 282 million people," Arifin remarked at the discussion.

According to him, Indonesia requires no less than 1 million hectares of new rice fields, and in every 5,000 hectares there should be a rice processing plant with a capacity of 40 thousand tons of milled rice annually.
