REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PADANG -- The administration of Padang city, West Sumatra, will commence the operations of a methane power plant built in the Air Dingin landfill area by August 2015, a local official stated here on Thursday (12/3).
"We are sure that the operation plan will be carried out on schedule as in March, the government will issue a tender for the procurement of the generator," Afrizal Khaidir, the head of Padang's sanitation and gardening office, noted.
He added that within four months from now, the Ministry of Public Works will send the generator to Padang that will be used to run the turbine to generate electricity.
The methane power plant, which was initiated in 2014 by the ministry through the General Director of Cipta Karya in cooperation with Padang's Sanitation and Gardening Office, is a pilot project in Indonesia.
"The power plant will prove that methane produced from piles of garbage can be used to generate electricity," Afrizal noted.
Currently, the office is preparing 29 wells in two inactive zones. The wells will be used to generate 130 thousand kilovolt-ampere (kVA) of electricity.
"We plan to utilize the landfills to generate electricity as well as to meet the needs of the people living in the surrounding areas," Afrizal added.
