REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, LONDON -- Indonesia will continue to encourage international cooperation to overcome the narcotic drug problem, stated Rachmat Budiman, the Indonesian Ambassador to Austria in Vienna.
At the 58th Session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) being held on March 9-17, 2015, at the United Nations in Vienna, Austria, Rachmat stated that the solution to the drug abuse problem is the common responsibility of all countries.
Therefore, he urged the international community to increase cooperation through an integrated approach in addressing narcotic drug issues.
On March 9, 2015, the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs began meeting in Vienna, where the policy-making body will tackle challenges ranging from protecting children from the sale of new psychoactive substances online to confronting financial flows linked to drug trafficking.
The Commission's session will include a special four-day segment on preparations for the UN General Assembly special session on the world drug problem in 2016.
Thereafter, on March 13-17, the Commission's regular segment will include deliberations on draft resolutions and the scope of the control of substances.
This session brings together around a thousand delegates representing member states, inter-governmental organizations, civil society, and the media for a global discussion on the world drug problem, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
Rachmat noted that due to the serious drug threat looming over the global community, Indonesia also highlighted the importance for countries to implement more serious and comprehensive measures to ensure effective enforcement of national laws against drug dealers in order to prosecute them for their deeds.
In this regard, he affirmed that Indonesia continued to push for a balanced approach with regard to controlling the demand and supply of drugs.
On the occasion, Rahmat pointed out that narcotic drug production, smuggling, and abuse are serious problems affecting Indonesia and are having a negative impact on the economy, social, and public health.
