REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BEKASI -- The Bekasi city administration is currently collecting data on public sanitation that is not fit for use in an effort to improve it, an official said.

"Recent data indicates that up to the year 2010, as many as 20 percent of the total 2.5 million population of Bekasi did not have adequate sanitation," the community-based Sanitation Program Coordinator of the Bekasi City Development Planning Board, Andrea Sucipto, revealed on Saturday.

He noted that the figure includes not only people, who do not have toilets, but also those who do not have access to proper sanitation.

According to him, this group of people, who do not have proper sanitation, were found at 34 different spots by the Bekasi city administration, including in Bantargebang, Margahayu, Medansatria, Bekasi Jaya, Kalibaru, Teluk Pucung, Pejuang, and others.

"These areas are not located adjacent to a watershed area, and are densely populated settlements, which are poor," he noted.
