REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- A legislator hailed the decision made by President Joko Widodo to settle the ongoing conflict between the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and the police, stating that it brought certainty to the situation.
"Although the decision was made quite late, it brought an element of certainty in the midst of all the speculations being made over the dynamic issue, which involved differences between officials of the KPK and the police," Secretary of the Democratic Party (PD) faction in the House of Representatives, Didik Mukrianto, said here on Thursday.
He viewed the president's decision as being aimed at maintaining the institutional strength of the KPK, a stance that was required to create a clean and corruption-free government.
President Joko Widodo decided to cancel the inauguration of Commissioner General Budi Gunawan, who was the sole candidate for the post, as the national police chief and nominate acting police chief Commissioner General Badrodin Haiti for the position, instead.
Jokowi also temporarily dismissed KPK Chief Abraham Samad and Deputy Chief Bambang Widjojanto, who were named as suspects by the police. He named three acting commissioners to fill their posts and that of the one left vacant by Busryo Muqoddas, whose term as a KPK commissioner ended recently.
According to Mukrianto, combating corruption and efforts towards law enforcement must continue, with peace being maintained between the KPK and the police.
With regard to his decision to cancel Budi Gunawan's inauguration, President Joko Widodo pointed out it was made because Gunawan's nomination had created differences in the community. He wished to maintain peace and meet the police force's need for a definitive chief, as well.
Regarding Samad and Widjojanto, the president noted that he made the decision to temporarily dismiss them due to their alleged involvement in legal issues and to adhere to the law.
He decided to appoint three acting commissioners to ensure the continuity of the anti-graft body, he explained.
