REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SAMARINDA -- Floods inundated several houses in Sepaku, North Penajam Paser District in East Kalimantan Province following incessant rains over the last week.
The floodwaters reached a height of up to 70 centimeters, Sepaku Sub-district Head Risman Abdul stated here, Sunday.
The local authorities have set up emergency tens to accommodate the flood victims.
In addition to the houses, nine hectares of rice fields were also flooded. Sepaku is prone to flooding and is inundated every year.
The flooding was worse as compared to the situation last year, Sepaku village head Haridsyah stated.
Several provinces are currently experiencing flooding and landslides, with the rainy season reaching its peak between January and February.
Some 274 districts and cities in Indonesia have been identified as areas prone to floods and landslides, according to Social Affairs Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa.
"Jakarta, Banten, and West Java are among the regions prone to floods and landslides," the minister said here Wednesday, after visiting flood-hit Kapuk in Cengkareng subdistrict, West Jakarta.
The social affairs ministry and the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) are jointly carrying out natural disaster rescue activities.
