LIPI to build 14 more botanical gardens

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BOGOR -- The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) has prioritized building 14 more regional botanical gardens by the year 2019 by deploying some 28 temporary employees to help accelerate the development, noted a Bogor Botanical Garden official.

"Development of 14 regional botanical gardens until 2019 is in the list of LIPI's priorities," Dwi Murti Puspitaningtyas, the head of Bogor Botanical Garden for Monitoring and Evaluation of Plant Conservation Area Development, stated here on Wednesday.

She noted that the 28 temporary employees have undergone training on February 5-18, 2015, in order to be placed at the 14 regional botanical gardens.

According to her, the training aims to empower the temporary employees with knowledge and understanding about the management of botanical gardens.

"The temporary employees are being trained, so that they are able to support the accelerated development of the botanical gardens in the regions and to strengthen the position of LIPI's Botanical Garden Plant Conservation Center (PKT)," she affirmed.

Dwi said that to build the regional botanical gardens, the PKT is responsible for providing guidance and technical supervision in the management of botanical gardens in every region across Indonesia.

She stated that in line with the 2015-2019 road map outlined by LIPI in cooperation with the Ministry of Public Works, 14 more botanical gardens will be constructed in numerous regions in Indonesia.

Dwi pointed out that the 14 botanical gardens will be built in Samosir in North Sumatra, Batam in Riau Islands, Sriwijaya botanical garden in South Sumatra, Liwa in Lampung, Kuningan in West Java, Batu Raden in Central Java, Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara, Sambas in West Kalimantan, Banua in South Kalimantan, Katingan in Central Kalimantan, Kendari in Southeast Sulawesi, and Pucak, Jompoe Parepare, and Massenrempulus Enrekang respectively in South Sulawesi.

She stated that Indonesia has 25 botanical gardens so far, and five of them are under the management of LIPI while the rest are managed by the regional governments with the assistance of LIPI's PKT.

The five gardens that come under LIPI's management are the Bogor botanical garden, Cibodas botanical garden, Purwodadi botanical garden, Bali botanical garden, and Cibinong Science Center Botanic Garden (CSC-BG).

She remarked that the government has set itself a target to develop 47 botanical gardens in numerous regions by 2025.
