REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has set up 28 tactical command posts to handle the flood crisis in Jakarta.

"The command posts have been set up since mid-January," BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho noted here on Tuesday.

The post, being assisted by military personnel and volunteers, has collected logistics for the flood victims and has carried out evacuation efforts since yesterday.

He informed that the highest alert status has been declared for the Karet and Angke Hulu rivers as their water levels have risen significantly.

Meanwhile, third-level alert status has been declared for the Ciliwung River at the Manggarai sluice gate, Pesanggrahan, Pulo Gadung, and Pasar Ikan. These conditions indicate that the floods in Jakarta might spread to wider areas.

Some 5,986 Jakarta residents have been forced to evacuate to safer places as the floods continue to inundate the capital city on Tuesday, according to BNPB.

"5,986 people are taking shelter in 14 locations. The number might increase because we are still waiting for more data from the field officers," Sutopo Purwo Nugroho stated.

The Jakarta disaster mitigation office (BPBD) reported that floods have affected 307 neighborhoods located in 97 urban villages in 33 sub-districts.

"The floods have affected 4,830 families comprising 15,517 people as their houses are inundated. Some 5,986 people are taking refuge in temporary shelters," he stated.

Of the total flood-affected neighborhoods, some 108 neighborhoods in 23 urban villages in eight sub-districts are located in West Jakarta. Some 8,237 inhabitants of 2,738 families are affected by the floods.

"Around 1,668 people have been evacuated in two locations. In Central Jakarta, 11 neighborhoods in eight urban villages in six sub-districts are inundated, but there is no evacuee," he revealed.

Incessant heavy downpours have triggered floods in parts of Jakarta since Sunday.

Floods in Jakarta are not only due to the overflowing rivers but also as a consequence of the poor drainage system and bad land spatial planning, according to BPBD.

The work in several business and commercial centers in Jakarta such as at Mangga Dua and Kelapa Gading areas has been paralyzed due to the flooding.
