REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PADANG -- West Sumatra Governor Irwan Prayitno expressed his support to promote wild boar hunting activity as a tourism icon as it is expected to positively contribute to the welfare of the people in the province.
"The unique boar hunting activity is preferred by numerous parties, and it has the potential to be developed as a leading tourism event in West Sumatra," the governor remarked here on Monday.
Irwan explained that a boar hunting activity at Matur Mudiak village in Agam district on Sunday attracted a multitude of people who gathered to witness the event.
According to him, the boar hunting activity can serve as an opportunity for the local communities to improve their welfare by selling food and beverages at the hunting area.
"We hope this kind of activity can also be developed as a tourism icon in other districts in West Sumatra," the West Sumatra governor stated, adding that the boar hunting activity in Agam on Sunday was attended by enthusiasts from the neighboring provinces of Bengkulu and Jambi.
Irwan noted that the boar hunting activity using dogs in West Sumatra has been popular since several decades and has been designated as a national tourism icon in the province.
In the meantime, Agam District Head Indra Catri stated that Sunday's event, which was participated by enthusiasts from across West Sumatra and the neighboring provinces, has showcased the importance of popularizing boar hunting as a tourism potential in the district.
"We hope that the wild boar hunting event in Agam will become part of the regional tourism agenda and promotion program," Indra said, adding that if the boar-hunting tradition was made part of the regional tourism agenda, then it will help to control the increasing population of the menacing pest.
