Indonesia-Brunei agree to expand cooperation

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah have agreed to expand bilateral cooperation in various fields, the Foreign Ministry Office said.

Jokowi visited Brunei Darussalam from 7-8 February , his first visit to that country.

President Jokowi and Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah agreed to strengthen cooperation in the field of manpower by holding a ministerial meeting to discuss labor agreement.

The agreement is in line with the Indonesian government's plan to provide protection for all Indonesian workers abroad.

There are many Indonesian workers in Brunei and neighboring Malaysia as well as in a number of other countries .

Sultan Bolkiah expressed his appreciation for the contribution of Indonesian migrant workers to economic development of Brunei Darussalam.

Jokowi had asked support from Brunei Darussalam for Jakarta's proposal to create an ASEAN legal instrument for migrant workers' protection .

The two countries expressed commitment to support cooperation in the preservation of the environment including forests under the framework of "Heart of Borneo Initiative".

The two leaders agrees to encourage a balanced trade and investment cooperation between the two countries.

Indonesia invited investors from Brunei to take part in the Indonesia's ambitious infrastructure projects such as port, toll road and railway track projects.

In addition, the two countries agreed to promoted defense cooperation.

Jokowi and Sultan Bolkiah witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding in the health sector by the health ministers of the two countries.

Another memorandum of understanding is on cooperation between the chamber of commerce and industry of the two countries signed by the Indonesian chamber of commerce and industry (Kadin) and his counterpart from Brunei.

On that occasion, President Jokowi presented an invitation to Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah to take part in the Asia-Africa summit meeting and the commemoration ceremony of the Conference of Asia-Africa in 22-24 April 2015 in Bandung.

President Jokowi was granted a Civilian Decoration Darjah Kerabat Laila Utama Most Appreciated by the Sultan , the highest token of appreciation for foreign heads of state or government.
