REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) will establish a research institute to conduct studies on the constitutional system.

"Thank God, we can maintain the dignity of the Assembly as a state institution that promotes deliberation. Hopefully, the decision can be maintained and preserved," Zulkifli Hasan, the MPR speaker, stated here on Wednesday.

The Assembly and the Regional Representative Council (DPD) have agreed to establish the research institute of the MPR, which will have a panel of experts.

Zulkifli expressed hope that the research institute can be formed on Tuesday, (February 10).

In addition, he was optimistic that the selected experts can have a lucid and unbiased thought process. The experts should not prioritize the interests of certain groups, including political parties.

The research institute will have 45 people, and the candidates will be proposed by different party factions.

Previously, Setara Institute, a non-governmental organization, had invited the MPR to take a closer look at the disharmony and conflict in the society.

"Now, we should not talk about ethnic, minority, and religious differences. There is a crucial issue to discuss and find the solution," Hasan remarked.

According to him, these activities were not different from the duties and authority assigned to the MPR.

"The MPR always receives ideas and public inputs related to the constitution and the practice of intolerance," he added.
