REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Defense Ministry is planning to improve infrastructure along the West Kalimantan province-Malaysia border to secure the Indonesian territory and improve the welfare of the people there.
"Some of the local people there live in poor conditions while the border is often breached by smugglers and irresponsible people who want to change the border stakes," spokesman for Tanjungpura Military Commander Lieutenant Mukhlis said here on Thursday.
Among the infrastructure facilities that will be built in the border area are roads for daily inspection, roads connecting security checkpoints to the nearest village, and the renovation of existing security checkpoints. Mukhlis noted that the Defense Ministry is also planning to purchase drones for border surveillance.
Apart from building infrastructure facilities, the Defense Ministry will also deploy its personnel to acquaint the local people with border areas.
