REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Chairman of the Jakarta Residents Forum (Fakta) Azas Tigor Nainggolan has remarked that motorcycle ban along Thamrin-Merdeka Barat street has not served the purpose of attracting motorists to public transport.

"It has been one month since motorcycles riders have stopped entering Thamrin and Merdeka Barat streets in Jakarta. However, the ban has not succeeded in pushing motorcycle users to use public transport," Azas Tigor Nainggolan said here on Tuesday.

He explained that the local government should draft a policy on how to get private vehicles users such as motorcycles riders to take public transport.

"The ban has only seen them take another route. During this one month of ban, motorcycles users have moved to other roads," he noted.

"Similarly, the double-decker buses that have been introduced by the Jakarta government have failed to attract motorcycles users. This maybe because the buses do not run services on those routes that motorcycle users frequently take," he remarked.

He pointed out that if the local government wants to reduce congestion, it should not only offer better public transport service but also make it accessible to public.

"If the public transport service and access do not match the needs of motorists, they will use their own vehicles," he emphasized.

He expressed hope that the Jakarta government will improve its public transport service and access. Subsequently, the local government can issue a policy to control the number of motorcycles and cars.

"Moreover, the President has brought down fuel prices. If the service and access to public transportation is not improved, the Jakarta Provincial Government will have to deal with more chaos," he cautioned.
