REPUBLIKA.CO.ID,  JAKARTA -- DKI Jakarta Administration plans to change drainage system to prevent floods. The current system cannot hold much more water.

"From the evaluation during floods, Jakarta's drainage system is horizontal. It directly dumps water to the sea. We will change the system," the Head of Public Work Department of Jakarta Administration, Agus Priyono, said on Wednesday, January 7.

The city plans to change the horizontal drainage into vertical so that the earth absorbs the water. "Drainage in streets and housing cannot hold more water. It causes floods," he said.

The local government will build infiltration wells in several points within the capital city. It allocates 50 billion IDR to build those wells. The city also works with Ministry of Public Works to dredge Ciliwung River and revitalize Manggarai and Karet Tengsin water gates.
