REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Coordinating Minister of Politics, Law and Security, Tedjo Edy Purdjianto, asked security forces to beef up guards in the country. It follows Australia and US travel warning to Indonesia.
"I have asked Police, State Intelligence Agency (BIN) and Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) to be more aware," Minister Purdjianto said on Wednesday, January 7.
No report on terrorism threat has come into view. The minister considers the current situation in Indonesia is still favourable. However, he treats US and Australia travel warning as an alert.
As cited from The Guardian, Australians travelling to Indonesia have been advised to exercise a high degree of caution following US government warnings about potential terrorist attacks. The Department of Foreign Affairs said it had received information that indicated terrorists might be planning attacks in Indonesia. The US government on Sunday warned of a potential threat against US-associated hotels and banks in Surabaya.
The department’s alert level has not changed, advising Australians in Indonesia to “exercise a high degree of caution”, but its travel advice has been to updated to note the US warning. “You should exercise particular caution around locations that have a low level of protective security and avoid places known to be possible terrorist targets,” the department said.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Julie Bishop, said Australians should always be cautious travelling overseas, especially as Indonesia has been an area of terrorism activity for some time. “Australia is monitoring this situation very closely. We treat terrorism and our counter-terrorism activities as our highest national security priority," Bishop said.
