Parliament: US embassy threat warning for Surabaya is overreacting

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Deputy Speaker of Indonesian House of Representatives, Fadli Zon, said that a move by US embassy which issued threat warning for Surabaya was overreacting. He sees that nothing poses a threat to US citizens in Surabaya.

"It is exaggerating. I don't see any signs of threat," Fadli Zon said on Tuesday, January 6.

Zon asked government, in this case, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to respond US move seriously. He urged government to send letter of protest to US Government. "Government must be pro active in explaining the condition in Indonesia. We don't have any security issue," he said.

The US embassy in Indonesia warned of a potential threat against American interests in Surabaya. "The US Embassy has been made aware of a potential threat against US-associated hotels and banks in Surabaya, Indonesia," the embassy said in a statement published on its website.

"The US Embassy recommends heightened vigilance and awareness of one's surroundings when visiting such facilities," it added, without providing any further details.

As a result, The US-associated offices in Surabaya are guarded by Brimob bomb squad member and police to anticipate the threat.
