Minister: Foreign workers must speak Indonesian

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Foreigners working in Indonesia must be able to speak Indonesian language starting this year. Ministry of Manpower will impose language test to every foreign workers, ensuring that they are able to speak the language.

The ministry will revise Minister of Manpower and Transmigration Decree No 12/2013 on procedure of foreign workers. "We expects the revised decree to be finished soon," Minister of Manpower M Hanif Dhakiri said recently.

The ministry is discussing the draft intensively, involving stakeholders within the ministry and related institutions. The ministry also work with Language Development Agency from University of Indonesia (UI). "We will apply Test of Indonesian as Foreign Language (TOIFL) to foreign workers," he said.

Every foreign workers must also meet several requirements. They must have at least a diploma or bachelor degree, proved by certificate submitted to the ministry.
