Jokowi announces establishment of Sea Security Agency

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo officially announced the establishment of Sea Security Agency (Bakamla) during commemoration of Hari Nusantara or the Archipelago's Day on Monday, December 15.

Bakamla, formed under Presidential Regulation No 178/2014 on Bakamla, has a main task to guard security and safety in Indonesian waters. "Bakamla marks the new era of maritime security operations," Cabinet Secretary Andi Widjajanto said on Monday, December 15.

Indonesian waters were initially guarded by Indonesia Maritime Security Coordinating Board (Bakorkamla). Based on Presidential Decree No 81/2005 Bakorkamla is owned by 12 stakeholders. Among these are Ministry of Maritime and Fishery Affairs, Ministry of Interior Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Transportation, Ministry of Finance, Attorney General, and Police.
