REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Minister of Maritime and Fishery Affairs Susi Pudjiastuti challenged journalists to investigate mafia who imported salt to Indonesia. Pudjiastuti called the mafia as salt samurai.

"Journalist must investigate who the samurai is," Pudjiastuti said on Monday, December 8.

Ministry of Maritime and Fishery Affairs stated that Indonesia would no longer import salt. However, the move is hampered by other ministries, such as Ministry of Industry and Ministry of Trade, as they shut the data of salt import.

"I have asked Ministry of Industry and Ministry of Trade to tell us about the samurai. In Korea, they fight corruption by open up those who involve in a case," he said.

The country's total need for salt for consumption reaches 1.7 million tonnes in 2014, while the industry needs 2.1 million tonnes of salt. Government still imports 1.6 million tonnes salt per year.
