REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MEDAN -- North Sumatra recorded a surplus of 559.027 million USD in its trade with the US in the year to October 2014, according to the Statistics Indonesia (BPS) Office in North Sumatra.

Over the period, North Sumatra's exports to the US reached 779.062 million USD, while its imports from the world's largest economy stood at 220.036 million USD, Head of the Distribution Statistics Section of the BPS Office in North Sumatra Bismark S Pardamean said on Sunday.

The January-October 2014 exports represented a 27.46 percent increase compared with 611.247 million USD in the same period last year. Secretary of the North Sumatra Chapter of the Indonesian Exporters Association (GPEI) Sofyan Subang attributed the high surplus to the province's declining imports from the US.

North Sumatra's imports in the first ten months of 2014 fell 12.86 percent to 220.036 million USD from 252.497 million USD in the same period last year, he said. The trade surplus indicated that the province's export performance was good, he added.

The US is among the export markets for North Sumatra's rubber, crude palm oil and aquatic products.
