REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Minister of Maritime and Fishery Affairs Susi Pudjiastuti confirmed that Indonesia would no longer import salt, the move certainly would hurt certain parties.

"We have been confirmed that we will stop importing salt," Pudjiastuti said on Thursday, December 4. She said that the Ministry of Trade talked to her earlier about the matter, saying that they would stop importing salt.

The move, however, will hurt certain parties. "Those who usually obtain big profit from imported salt will be hurt, but this is for the sake of the people," she said.

The country's total need for salt for consumption reaches 1.7 million tonnes in 2014, while the industry needs 2.1 million tonnes of salt. Salt imports in January to September 2014 are mostly from Australia, India, China, New Zealand, Denmark and Netherlands.
