REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDUNG -- Indonesian manufacturing industry specializing in military products, PT PINDAD, is ready to supply ammunition for German-made Main Battle Tank (MBT) Leopard. The state owned company is also ambitious to export its ammunition.
"We have purchased Leopard Tank from Germany. We are ready to supply the ammo," Munition Head Division of PT PINDAD, I Wayan Sutama, said on Wednesday, November 19.
PINDAD has sent seven experts to Germany for transfer of technology and prepared 3-hectare area in Layar Mountain, Malang, to make the ammo. Yet, Sutama cannot ensure whether PINDAD will make the ammo from scratch or only assemble. The making of ammo is also aimed to help government decreasing import.
"We cannot let our foreign exchange oozing out," he said.
The land-system and weapons maker doesn't only seek domestic market, but also foreign market. "Whoever needs ammo for Leopard, tell us," he said. Market share for Leopard tank munitions in Asia is still limited, only Singapore, Indonesia and Australia that use Leopard.
PINDAD aims to be a prominent weapon producer in Asia in 2023. The company targets to produce 76 mm, 90 mm and 105 mm ammunition in 2019. Sutama said international market mainly used that ammunition. "The market is promising," he said.
