President Jokowi pardons person charged in defamation case

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesian President Joko Widodo has pardoned the social media bullying criminal, MA, who circulated a modified porn pictures showing the President and former president Megawati Soekarnoputri.

"I have forgiven him 100 percent," the President said after meeting with the parents and relatives of MA in the State Palace on Saturday.

According to Jokowi, in this era of openness, people must respect each other. The parents of MA, Mursida and Syafrudin, had visited the State Palace to meet Jokowi and apologize for the incident that involved their son.

Jokowi, accompanied by first lady Iriana, met MA's parents in the afternoon. Mursida emphasized that her visit was to apologize on her son's behalf. The parents were accompanied by several lawyers to their meeting with the President.

Earlier, MA was arrested after he violated Article 29 Law No. 44/2008 on porn-related crimes. The law stipulates maximum 12 years of jail for such crimes. Joko Widodo's lawyer Henry Yosodiningrat had reported about MA to the police on July 27, 2014, and MA was detained on October 23, 2014.
