REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Acting governor of Jakarta Basuki Tjahaja Purnama has stated that Indonesia's youth should optimize their role to bind the nation together.

He was speaking at the 83rd commemoration of Sumpah Pemuda (Youth Pledge) in the National Monument (Monas), Central Jakarta.

"The theme of Youth Pledge is to continuously build a strong youth. That is, all young people must stay united so that the unity of the nation is unaffected," Basuki said here on Tuesday.

According to him, if the young stand united, the nation's development can be uninterrupted.

"If young people are united, the development of Indonesia will be proper, smooth and continuous. And finally, we can become a developed nation," he emphasized.

Thus, he said, by 2015, Indonesia's youth should be ready and able to compete with other nations.

"The youth must prepare to face all possibilities and compete with other nations. The mindset of the youth must be constructed in a manner that makes them eligible to face global competition," Basuki remarked.

The ceremony was also attended by Regional Secretary of Jakarta Saefullah, Deputy Governor for Spatial Planning and Environment Sarwo Handayani, Jakarta Sports Agency head Ratiyono, Jakarta Education Agency Head Lasro Marbun, and Jakarta Public Order Agency Head Hadi Santoso.
