Envoy: President Putin hopes to meet President Jokowi soon

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Russia's President Vladimir Putin expects to meet the newly inaugurated President Joko Widodo, according to Russia's Minister of Trade and Industry Denis Manturov.

Denis Manturov is Russia's special envoy who attended the inauguration of President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla "JK" held at the parliament building here on Monday.

"As a special envoy of my country (Russia), of course, I have conveyed the messages from President Putin to President Jokowi, about his congratulations to Mr. Jokowi and the hopes for the future years. We are expecting that in the near future, there will be a meeting between the two leaders to discuss various issues related to bilateral cooperation," Manturov noted.

He also praised the smooth running of the inauguration ceremony.

"It is an honor for us to be able to witness the inauguration of the Indonesian president," he revealed.

"We do hope our good cooperation in various fields, whether in politics or economy, trade, and so on, can be developed in the coming years," Manturov added.

Manturov expressed optimism that Indonesia and Russia can build a strong foundation to continue their sound cooperation and increase trade volume between the two countries.

"We are also interested to develop the metallurgy industry, in which Russian technology can be applied here as we see Indonesia has the potential to excel in the field of metallurgy," he emphasized.

Jokowi was inaugurated as Indonesia's seventh president on October 20, 2014, after he won the presidential election on July 9. Jokowi and his running mate Jusuf Kalla secured 70,997,833 votes, or 53.15 percent of the total 133,574,277 votes. However, their rivals, Prabowo Subianto and his running mate Hatta Rajasa, secured 62,576,444 votes, or 46.85 percent of the total.
