Bojonegoro's root teak crafts penetrate int'l markets

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BOJONEGORO -- The teak root crafts made in Geneng Village, Margomulyo Sub District, Bojonegoro District, East Java, have penetrated the international market, chief of the Root Teak Craft Community, Yuli Winarno, said here Friday.

"There are 65 teak root craftsmen whose works have been marketed overseas," he added.

According to him, the root teak crafts that have been delivered abroad including the United States, Australia, South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, and India, are chairs, tables, and various of souvenirs.

Every month there are 100 trucks carrying crafts amounting to about Rp3 billion (US$245 thousands) to be exported.

"There are some foreign buyers directly come to the craftsmen to get the products. Meanwhile, the delivery of products to the foreign buyers is done by the local merchants via Surabaya, East Java seaport," Yuli said.

He explained that the price of a chair, a table, and a couch is about Rp150 to Rp500 thousands or about US$12.25 to US$40,9 respectively, and certain products, such as a big-sized couch, is Rp5 million (about US$409).

The raw materials of teak root are obtained not only in Bojonegoro, but also neighboring districts such as Nganjuk, Tuban, and Blora.

"The teak root crafts in Bojonegoro involves around 2,000 people only for getting the raw materials in the forests," Yuli said.

He is optimistic that the teak root crafts will always have their markets at home and abroad because of the uniqueness and the aesthetics.
