REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA - The Surabaya city government and state railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) will soon inspect the land that is set to be used to develop a mass rapid transit (MRT) system in the city.

"We will inspect the land (allocated) for the tramway network this week," Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini said on Tuesday.

She added that the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the tramway network would be held mid-October as scheduled.

"The land belongs to PT KAI, so it is up to them. However, the development of the MRT system in the form of a monorail still awaits the (inauguration of the) new government," she stated.

Regarding the construction of the frontage road to support the MRT system, the mayor noted that the land in front of Sunan Ampel State Islamic University and Veterania Senior High School had been cleared.

"Land near the East Java provincial police station is the only one left to be cleared, but we have written to them," she remarked.

Moreover, during his visit to Tandes Station last Friday (October 3), Deputy Transportation Minister Bambang Susanto pointed out that Surabaya had many ongoing railway-based transportation projects, which, he said, were far closer to completion than many projects in other major cities of the country.

Surabaya was contemplating the construction of a number of railway-based transportation projects such as tramways, monorails, airport railways and logistic railways, apart from commuter lines and container railways, Susanto revealed.
