REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Local governments are being encouraged to register their cultural heritage icons with UNESCO in order to ensure their protection.

The announcement was made during the certification of the Saman dance from Gayo Lues, Aceh province, as well as the Papuan 'noken' knitting bag as a part of UNESCO's world heritage icons. The certificate was offered by the National Archives of Indonesia to each local government. Indonesia has more than 4.000 non-object cultural heritage artefacts to be registerd annually, Nuryanti emphasized.

"Last year we had 70 established cultural heritage icons and now we have around 100," she stated.

The protection, development and use of every heritage were made the government's responsibility, she explained further. The government did not want to lose the opportunity of getting recognition for its world heritage icons and artefacts from UNESCO, according to her.
