REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Government targetted to operate a nuclear power plant with a capacity of 1,000 mega watt (MW) in 2030. Secretary General of Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, M Teguh Pamuji said that the target was contained in draft of National Energy Plan.

"There will be a nuclear power plant in 2030," Pamuji said on Friday.

According to member of National Energy Council Abadi Purnomo, the operation of nuclear power plant by 2030 is a realistic target. Until the time, the use of fossil energy from coal, oil and gas is still enough. The draft also contained the termination of export coal, energy stocks, and strategic reserves of energy.

"We are targeting the draft will be published in 2015," Purnomo added.

The National Energy Plan is mandated through Government Regulation (PP) on National Energy Policy, which is now awaiting final ratification by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. The National Energy Policy is mandated by Law No. 30/2007 on Energy.

Indonesia has devoted significant effort to gain expertise in nuclear power technology for more than five decades. Unless the country moves further towards nuclear development to answer the country’s long-term energy shortage.
