REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MATARAM -- The West Nusa Tenggara provincial government has hailed copper and gold mining company PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara's decision to drop its international arbitration suit against a ban on the export of concentrate minerals.

The decision demonstrated that the subsidiary of US-based Newmont Mining Corp. had good intention with the Indonesian government, West Nusa Tenggara Deputy Governor H Muh Amin said here on Sunday.

"Of course, we warmly welcome the good intention on the part of Newmont to resolve the problem. In fact, before the company decided to drop the lawsuit they had met with the governor," he said.

With Newmont dropping the lawsuit, the Indonesian government and the company could resume all stalled negotiations particularly those related to the export ban, he said.

"That's why we ask the government and Newmont to resume the negotiations as quickly as possible," he said.

If the problem was not solved quickly it would have a detrimental effect on the province because it would give rise to social, economic and security problems, he said.

PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara and Nusa Tenggara Partnership BV filed a suit with the international court of arbitration against the ban on the export of concentrates om July 1 this year.
