REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PONTIANAK - Members of the Indonesian indigenous youths association (BPAN) in West Kalimantan Province will attend the United Nations (UN) Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) conference in Thailand from August 28-30, 2014.

The chairman of the West Kalimantan youth association, Glorio Sanen, said on Tuesday that the conference would discuss issues surrounding livelihoods and food security for the peoples of Asia.

"It is an honor to be able to represent Indonesia to discuss livelihoods and food security for people in the Asian forum," said Sanen.

Sanen explained that the conference was initiated by the Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP), which invited Thailand (as the host), Cambodia, Laos, Nepal, India, and Bangladesh. Sanen added that the topic to be discussed was especially important since Indonesia, as one of the developing countries, had been impacted by the global food crisis.

The world, Sanen noted, was also experiencing the effects of the energy and monetary crisis, relating to food issues.

"It becomes the multinationals' responsibility to resolve the crisis," he said.
