REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Chairman of Indonesian Ulamas Council (MUI) Ma'ruf Amin said that copcept of caliphate in Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) movement did not comply with Islamic teaching.
"Its teaching does not comply (with Islamic teaching, ed) because it builds caliphate using oppressive measure and violence. Indonesia is committed to democracy and reject any violent measure," Amin said on Thursday.
The council has firmly confirmed that ISIS was unlawful due to its violent method, killing innocent people, destroying sacred sites, and targeting to ruin nation state.
"Those acts are forbidden (in Islam), so their supporters are also unlawful. Yet, it is not necessary for MUI to issue new religious verdict or fatwa, because ISIS is clearly forbidden," he said.
Amin admitted that the term of caliphate was still subjected to debate among scholars. Caliphate can also be defined as leading the nation vigorously.
"But when people try to build caliphate using ISIS' method, the movement potentially to divide Muslim community and threat Indonesian state," he said.
Earlier, MUI and many Islamic organizations in Indonesia declared their rejection over ISIS' ideology.
