Govt to appoint lawyers to handle Newmont arbitration

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesian government will appoint lawyers in dealing with international arbitration filed by PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Chairul Tanjung said that government currently conducted fit and proper test to find good lawyers.

"President asked us to find good lawyers (after Eid al-Fitr)," Tanjung said recently.

Earlier, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has signed a decree to form a team to deal with Newmont arbitration. The team will also consider necessary measure against Newmont including imposing sanction. 

The team consists of Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Minister of Finance, Attorney General and Chairman of Investment and Coordinating Board (BKPM), and coordinated by Minister for Economic Affairs. A technical team will be set up and chaired by BKPM chairman. Tanjung said that the government will take a form stance towards Newmont. He emphasized thad the mining contractor must abide by the Indonesia law.
