Al-Sisi, Ban discuss situation in Palestine

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, CAIRO -- Egyptian President Abdelfatah Al-Sisi discussed in a phone call with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday the latest developments of the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories and the ongoing Israeli military onslaught on Gaza Strip.

The UN chief signaled the contacts he makes with various regional and international players, including Jordan, to deescalate the tension and bring the Israeli military campaign to a halt, Egyptian Presidential Spokesman Ehab Badawi told reporters.

Ban commended the Egyptian efforts to restore calm and stop the bloodshed in Gaza as well as the relief efforts for the Palestinian people.

He noted that Egypt is one of the most active players in the region that could contribute effectively in bringing the situation back to normal, according to the spokesman.

Ban voiced hope that the planned UN Security Council meeting, due later this week, will reach a resolution on ceasefire in Gaza.

On his part, President Al-Sisi noted that the Palestine question continues to be a top priority for the Egyptian foreign policy despite his preoccupation about the domestic affairs.

He highlighted the need to reach a fair and comprehensive settlement to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict that could ensure full restoration of the rights of the Palestinian people foremost among which is the right to establish an a viable independent state within the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
