REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KUDUS -- Public Housing Minister Djan Faridz has said that the government would increase the number of low cost apartments to help the economically-weak get an appropriate dwelling place.
"Moreover now when housing price is soaring to make it difficult for the economically-weak group to buy," he said after paying respect at the tomb of religious figure Sunan Kudus here on Sunday.
He said housing price has soared due to the hike of prices of building materials making the price of a housing unit to be very expensive.
He said bank interests have also risen up to 12 percent and the burden is extended to buyers.
He said although bank interests for developers rose interests for buyers did not increase.
The minister called on the low-economically group to no worry about being unable to get a place to stay because of the soaring housing price as the government would also build more low cost apartments for rent in the regions.
For those whose houses are not decent enough to stay in he said the government meanwhile has prepared a housing improvement program called "Bedah Rumah".
For the program the government has allocated a budget for the improvement of 250,000 housing units a year, he said.
The number of houses that has been improved through the program meanwhile has reached 750,000 units, he added.
Under the Bedah Rumah program, families would be given Rp7.5 million to Rp15 million each to improve their houses.
He said the funds are extended in cooperation with regional governments that would determine which houses need improvement.
"So, proposals come from regional governments," he said.
Under the program, the minister said, those who have houses but their houses are not decent need not to rent the apartment but may have their houses improved.
