No growth of population decline in last 10 years

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- Head of National Population and Family Planning Coordinating Board (BKKBN), Fasli Jalal said that there was no growth of population decline in last 10 years. In fact, BKKBN targeted a 0.5 percent reduction in the percentage of population in 2010-2035.

"If there is no progress, Indonesian total population could increase 140 million people," Jalal said recently.

It means, if total of Indonesian population stood at 238.5 million people in June 2010 (Bappenas data) - with the addition of 140 million people -

the figure will increase to 378.5 million people in 2035. Jalal said that all parties, especially central government and regional House of Representatives (DPRD) should play important role to push down the high numbers.

According to Jalal, Indonesia is now highly depending on local economy. DPRD will not be easy to achieve the population target as they served only for five years. That is why BKKBN proposing the establishment of Regional Population and Family Planning Coordinating Board.

"The agency can hold up to more districts and push down the population density based on rate and total area," Jalal said.
