REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BATAM - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said economic and trade progress should not keep the public away from religion.

Setting aside the role of religion was a setback to a nation, the President said while opening the 25th National Quran Reading Contest (MTQ) on Friday night.

The 25th MTQ is held in Batam which serves as one of the important economic gates in the western part of Indonesia. It was a signal that the rapid trade and industrial growth must not set aside the role of religion, he said. Religious norms were very important for the life of mankind because they would strengthen their belief in God and increase their work ethic, he added.

The 25th MTQ will be held from June 2 to 14. A number of activities including creative product exhibition and bazaar also highlight the event.
