REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TIMIKA - National flight carrier, PT Garuda Indonesia plans to open new route of Jakarta-Makassar-Timika-Jayapura this month. Head Department of Communication and Information in Mimika, John Rettob said that local government expected the state owned aircraft after Merpati Nusantara stopped its services in those area.

"The flight will be started on May 15. However, no official information from Garuda Indonesia so far. We only hope the schedule will be sooner," Rettob said recently.

The route has high demand when Merpati Nusantara stopped its activity in February 2014. Minister of Transportation then offered Merpati's routes to several airline companies, including Garuda Indonesia and Sriwijaya Air.

Garuda Indonesia will carry out a roundtrip flight of Jakarta-Makassar-Timika-Jayapura everyday, while Sriwijaya will take over Timika-Sorong-Manado flight three times a week. Moses Kilangin's airport operator in Timika has agreed the time slot for both companies.
