REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Ministry of Transportation has declared a national mourning week over the death of an 18-year-old shipping academy (STIP) student, Dimas Dikita Handoko, after he was tortured by his seniors.

"We convey our deep condolences to the family of the late Handoko. For this, we declare a one-week national mourning for the Ministry of Transportation and all STIPs across the country," Human Resources Development Department of the Ministry of Transportation Santoso Edi Wibowo stated here on Monday.

The mourning week was declared for a week beginning on Monday, April 28 until Sunday, May 4, and should be observed by all STIPs across the country, he declared.

All students during the mourning period are obligated to wear black ribbons on the left arm of their shirts.

"The ribbon will symbolize that we are on a mourning phase and it is expected that students will be aware of the sad event so that they can take it as a responsibility to control their fellow students," he asserted.

Dimas, a first grade student, died after being tortured on Saturday by seven of his grade II seniors at his rented room in Kebon Baru, Blok R Gang II, No. 29, Sempert Barat village, Cilincing, North Jakarta.
