REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, WAYKANAN -- Residents of Sukadana village, Buaybahuga sub-district, agreed to knock down an abandoned school building to fill the main road's potholes in order to reduce traffic congestions in the area.

"Half of the three rooms in the Sukadana SDN 1 (elementary school) school building had collapsed during heavy rains and strong winds earlier, while the other half has been demolished as per the community's decision," stated local resident Hudi Rahman here on Monday.

The school classrooms are no longer being used for learning activities and hence, the community agreed to tear it down to fix the potholes on the road.

"Every Friday morning, since the last three months, the villagers have been working together to fix the broken road that spans about two kilometers," observed Hudi.

Hudi explained that the road was badly damaged, making it impassable when it rains. Several crop transportation vehicles have broken their axles while trying to pass through the damaged road.

Another Waykanan resident, Heri Amanudin pointed out that there are a number of broken roads in the area such as in Negeriagung sub-district in Waykanan that forms a puddle of mud during heavy rains, making the road even more difficult for commuters.

Some local residents also emphasized that the roads in Negeriagung sub-district have been damaged for more than three years.

Despite the fact that many roads have been reported to be heavily damaged, the local government has not taken up road maintenance in several areas, stated the local Ansor Youth Movement (GP Ansor) Leader Supri Iswan.
