National sugar production to rise

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA - National sugar production in 2014 is predicted to increase compared to last year's production. Senior Advisor of Indonesian Sugar Association (DGI), Adig Suwandi explained that sugar cane cultivation areas reached 472,792 hectares (ha).

"Sugar cane plantation produced 26,182,325 tonnes, while its productivity is expected to reach 2,927,486 tonnes," Suwandi said recently.

Sugar cane productivity is expected to reach 76.5 tonnes per ha with a yield of 8.09 percent. Indonesia will be self sufficient in domestic sugar consumption if the production target reaches 2.6 million tonnes.j

DGI's data showed that sugar production centers are still concentrated in Java with total area of 305,302 ha. Production of milled sugar cane reached 23,381,748 tonnes. Some sugar cane plantation in Java estimated to decrease due to a less favorable sugar prices in 2013.
