REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PEKANBARU - The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) reported a female Sumatran elephant was dead in Tesso Nillo, Province of Riau. The case was found after the the elephan was tracked using GPS collar.
Relation Head of WWF Riau, Syamsidar said that Riau Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) had conducted an investigation.
"Her dead body was found last weekend. We hope law enforcement works well in handling this case," Syamsidar said recently.
In February 2014, WWF also discovered seven dead elephants in Tesso Nillo. Head of Tesso Nilo National Park, Tandia, thought the critically endangered animals were poisoned for their tusks, four months before discovered by team.
Dozens of elephants died after being poisoned in recent years on Sumatra Island, as the creatures encounter with humans due to the rapid expansion of palm oil plantations that destroy their habitat. WWF recorded that there were only 2,400-2,800 Sumatran elephants remaining in the wild. They could face total extinction in less than 30 years.
