REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BEIRUT -- UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Derek Plumbly on Tuesday reassured Lebanon of the international community's commitment to supporting the country and preserving its stability.
Plumbly reiterated the "commitment to supporting Lebanon during a period of numerous political, economic and security challenges emanating from the Syrian crisis," according to a statement by the UN media office.
The UN official also emphasized the importance of holding the presidential polls on time as the means to preserve the country's stability.
Plumbly said "the stability in Lebanon would be best served by holding the presidential elections as scheduled on the basis of Lebanon's constitutional procedures and democratic practices."
Lebanese President Michel Suleiman's term will end in May.
Earlier last month Lebanon announced a new government, ending a ten-month political deadlock due to the struggle between the country's Shiite Hezbollah movement, which backs Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government, and the Sunni-led opposition, which supports the Syrian rebels.
